The Team at Custom Survival Solutions

James Patrick Owen – Owner and Senior Survival Advisor

James is the Owner and Senior Survival Advisor for Custom Survival Solutions. As a former Marine Corps Infantry Squad Leader, James spent several years in various locations around the world learning to not just survive, but to thrive, and teaching his fellow Marines the same. James has trained in various locations around the world, from the jungles of the Philippines, to the urban environments of Kenya, to the deserts of Kuwait, to the snow and mountains of Northern California to the woods and beaches of Camp Pendleton, to the deserts of 29 Palms.

After earning an Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps, James joined the California Army National Guard as a Blackhawk (UH-60) Mechanic working on various electrical, hydraulic and power plant systems. Because of his experience as a squad leader in the Marine Corps, James was asked to train his fellow soldiers on the use of all weapon systems unique to the infantry. Some of those systems included:

  • M16A2/M4 service rifle
  • M203 Grenade Launcher
  • M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)
  • Beretta M9 pistol

While in the National Guard, James trained his fellow soldiers how to survive during and after an aircraft crash and how to perform basic SAR (Search and Recovery) missions to recover injured and non-injured personnel and equipment.

James has a passion for helping others learn the necessary skills needed to survive any disaster organic to Southern California (earthquakes, firestorms, floods and power outages) as well as realistic man-made disasters. James always trains his clients to have the highest likelihood for success in any disaster scenario. James recently became a member of Team Rubicon, a non-profit organization consisting of military veterans and medical professionals irrevocably committed to changing veteran reintegration and disaster response. Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.

When James isn’t helping people prepare, you can likely find him coaching his son’s soccer team, out camping with his family, or watching his favorite football team the Denver Broncos. James lives in Southern California with his beautiful wife Larisa and their son, Nick.

Our Mission

Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.

Team Rubicon Saves Lives.

Since its creation in January 2010, TR has impacted thousands of lives – in Haiti, Chile, Burma, Pakistan, Sudan, and here at home, in Vermont, Maryland, Missouri, and Alabama.  TR reaches victims outside the scope of where traditional aid organizations venture; victims on the fringe.

Team Rubicon Engages Veterans.

Hundreds of US military veterans, many returning home after fighting ten years of war, find a renewed sense of purpose for their skills and experiences through TR.

Team Rubicon Sets Itself Apart In the Nonprofit World.

Is it a disaster relief organization? A veteran-focused enterprise?  The truth is it’s both. TR pioneered a new paradigm in disaster response while redefining the meaning of veteran reintegration into society.

Team Rubicon Pioneered the Concept of Veteran-Focused Disaster Response.

On the streets of Port-au-Prince, in the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, TR’s military veterans realized a simple truth – natural disasters present many of the same problems that confront troops in Iraq and Afghanistan: unstable populations, limited resources, horrific sights, sounds and smells.  The skills cultivated on those same battlefields – emergency medicine, risk assessment and mitigation, teamwork and decisive leadership – are invaluable in disaster zones.
